Surusinghe – “Difference Is What Makes The World An Interesting Place”

Surusinghe has recently released “Heaven”, the second single on her forthcoming EP, on the ‘Steel City Dance Discs’ label. In support of her release, we asked her to introduce herself.

Who are you?

Suze Gurusinghe aka Surusinghe 🙂.

Where are you from?

Naarm (otherwise known as Melbourne, Australia), but now I live in East London.

What do you sound like?

I guess I would describe it as bassy/percussive sounds with Asian influences. 

Why should we follow what you’re doing?

Because people should always support new women in the scene! And because hopefully, I sound a little different to the other stuff you’re listening to. Because difference is good. Difference is what makes the world an interesting place.

Which of your tracks sums you up? Why?

I don’t think of any of them, to be honest. My tracks would have to be much more chaotic and silly 😁.

What have you got coming out in the near future?

My full EP is dropping on June 23rd. I’m so excited! There are 3 new tracks on there alongside the two singles that are already out. I feel like I like those 3 more now, just because I’ve heard the other two so many times.

What or who is your biggest influence and why?

Hmm 🤔, most of the female Australian producers I grew up around. Andy Garvey, HAAi, Logic1000, Nite Fleit – these women inspired me so much when I first started working in music.

How did you get into DJing/producing, to begin with?

I got my first internship at a touring company in Naarm called ‘Novel‘. It was where I really discovered my passion for electronic music and it wasn’t long after that I started DJing. My wonderful colleague Monty was my unofficial agent and would slide me onto all of the parties the company threw. It was nepotism at its finest, and I guess the beginning of it all.

What are your top three studio items?

My laptop, Ableton and headphones.

Who or what have you sacrificed for your art?

A lot of sleep. Working a full-time job that’s extremely demanding and trying to create new music really takes it out of you. I’m either feeling creative but have to work, or can’t create because I’m overworked. But, gotta get that paper I guess!

What’s been your favourite place to play so far?

Hmm, the London show I did at Werkhaus with Skin on Skin and Tommy Holohan was pretty special. A lot of my friends from Australia were there and it just felt like a big family affair. But also, the PHENOMENA party we ran back at home over the summer. The lineup was me, DAWS, Sam Alfred, In2stellar and NFS. It was such an amazing party! So nice to run an event with my best mates as well.

Where can we hear your music?

Bandcamp and all major streaming platforms. Hopefully one will go TikTok viral soon – a girl can dream 😂.

What one song would feature on the soundtrack to your life?

Natasha Bedingfield – Unwritten.

What motivates you?

Managers and agents. Actually, no – assistants! Management and booking assistants are the glue that holds our industry together, and I am motivated to do well so that I shall never have to work as one again.

What’s the best bit of advice you’ve received?

When choosing a career, figure out what you are most passionate about and find a way to use that passion to help others. 

Where will you be in five years’ time?

Hopefully on a super yacht in Belize with my best gal friends.
