Nathalie Duchene, draws heavily on the French touch sound. With a new release, ‘Don’t Go, on Boston Bun’s Circa ’99, we asked her to introduce herself.

Who are you?

I am Nathalie Duchene. A DJ and producer.

Where are you from?

I come from Belgium but I moved to Paris when I was 18.

What do you sound like?

I think there is a duality in my productions. Some are very happy and sunny tracks and others are much darker. It’s like two people fighting in my head!

Why should we follow what you’re doing?

Because..!

Which of your tracks sums you up? Why?

‘Don’t Go’, because it is the fruit of many inspirations that I have accumulated over the past few years that includes French touch artists like Daft Punk, Etienne de Crécy, Cassius.

What have you got coming out in the near future?

I’m on tour all summer. A lot of ‘Musicorama’, my radio show, and my residency ‘Face to Face’ at Club le Sacré. And new productions of course!

What or who is your biggest influence and why?

I have a lot of influences but if I had to keep only one it would be Kraftwerk! I think it’s the basis of all artists who make electronic music today.

What have you released so far?

I released Praia my first 3 tracks EP on Toy Tonics last year and ‘Don’t Go’ a few days ago on Circa (Boston Bun’s label) and a new EP is on the road for the end of the year!

How did you get into DJing/producing, to begin with?

As far as I can remember I was first a DJ at friends’ parties! I was the only unsociable and unbearable person glued to the iPod playing the songs they wanted to share with others. Yes, it’s the very real beginning! And then I started producing music in 2018 with friends of mine in Berlin.

One day a DJ friend of mine told me that the job of the DJ was the same as a top athlete.. and it’s so true!

What are three things on your studio shopping list?

I’m posting an ad! I am looking for a Pro One (Sequential Circuits) in good condition! If I had the space (and the money) I would buy a CS 80 and a Fairlight!

Who or what have you sacrificed for your art

Absolutely nothing, not doing this job would have been a sacrifice for me!

What’s been your favourite place to play so far?

I think it was the Nitsa in Barcelona and the Rex of course in Paris! But I’m going to play at Hï in Ibiza this summer with Glitterbox so it is possible that my top venue will change!

What one song would feature on the soundtrack to your life?

I think of a track by Philippe Sarde ‘Les Choses De La Vie’. But also “Burning” by Daft Punk!

What motivates you?

Travelling, meeting different audiences, playing in clubs that I don’t know! And good coffee!

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

I’ve never been a party girl! I don’t really like clubbing..

What’s the best bit of advice you’ve received?

One day a DJ friend of mine told me that the job of the DJ was the same as a top athlete.. and it’s so true!

Where will you be in five years’ time?

I don’t like to project myself so far. I try to live every day with the same intensity as if everything were to stop in 1 min. It’s not going to stop in a minute.. is it..?
