One of the more popular reverbs around, the Pro-R has had an update to the Pro-R 2.

FabFilter has announced the Pro-R 2, the upgraded version of their much-loved reverb plugin. It has a slew of new features, including comprehensive multichannel compatibility, two brand-new reverb algorithms, IR import and replication, ducking and gating function and analog-style saturation.

What’s New In the Pro-R 2?

The Pro-R 2 now supports immersive channel layouts up to 9.1.6 Dolby Atmos. It handles this automatically whenever it is applied to a surround channel. When active, you can apply individual Decay Rate and Post EQ bands to any combination of channels using the new Speakers panel. You use the Predelay, Character, Decay Rate, etc to get the balance between the front and back of the immersive space. The focus here, like a lot of the FabFilter portfolio, appears to be useability and the avoidance of complex routing systems.

FabFilter has not gone heavy on new algorithms, only two new ones make the cut. These are ‘Vintage’ inspired by classic digital reverb units of the past 30 or 40 years and ‘Plate’ – a new version of plate reverb – ideal for drums and vocals.

It’s also now possible to import your own Impulse Response – which is a massive boost for sound designers. Multiple competitors have offered this already, and for some time, so it’s compelling to see FabFilter join the crowd and give users the option. Once imported, they automatically recreated as algorithmic setups — including Decay Rate and Post EQ shaping — closely matching their sonic characteristics. Clever clogs.

The last new feature is you can now set the wet signal level to drop whenever the dry signal is present with the Ducking control; dial in density and saturation with the Thickness knob; tempo-syncable Auto Gate; and capture and hold the tail indefinitely with a click of the Freeze button.

FabFilter Pro-R 2 is now available for EUR 169, USD 169, or GBP 144, supporting both Windows and macOS in VST and VST 3, Audio Units, AAX, and AudioSuite plug-in formats. Bundles with FabFilter Pro-R 2 and other FabFilter plug-ins are also available at: www.fabfilter.com/shop
