After a terrible car accident as a teenager left her in serious condition, Yulia Niko passed the time, absorbing everything and anything about dance music. A year later, she was playing her first gig, and she’s just released her debut album, TWINSOUL. We asked her to sit through our long-standing Q&A series.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
I would be a stand-up comedian. Or maybe a detective. Or a yoga teacher!
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Never listen to anyone!
Best club experience?
Ah, it’s so hard to say. The first club that comes to mind, which I just recently went to, is in Baku, Azerbaijan. The club is named FOMO—it’s amazing.
Most of my tracks and beautiful melodic sounds were made with DIVA
What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?
I was a waitress in Manhattan. It’s not a bad job but the people who came into the restaurant were so moody and I don’t deal well with moody people.
How do you know when a track’s finished?
I think this is my biggest problem because I get overexcited. I often think the track is finished when I release it, and then one year later, I’m like, “Ugh…”
Which song do you wish you wrote?
One that’s going to win a Grammy!
What’s the easiest way to make it in the music industry?
Get a Grammy!! To make a hit – that’s for sure.
Recommend us a book.
I really like the book ‘Attached’. I recommend it to all my friends, and they always thank me. It’s about relationships and how to love yourself and be better with yourself. It’s a very important book—read it.
What one piece of software/kit could you not do without? Why?
Most of my tracks and beautiful melodic sounds were made with DIVA. I highly recommend that you get DIVA if you start producing music—it’s the key.
