Mobilee’s master of eclecticism shows us round his awesome studio, with evergreen classics sitting alongside a synth he describes as a “little shit”.
Rodriguez Jr – My Studio
My studio is based around a Mac Pro running Ableton Live with plugins from Native Instruments and Universal Audio.
I am a huge fan of Native Instruments. Pure forward-thinking madness. And it’s always great sounding.
The UAD plugins are the nicest sounding plugins ever. They’re used massively for EQs, compression and reverbs.
Roland Juno 106
The best pads ever, even though the chorus is noisy like a thunderstorm. This one has one of its voice chips dying, so it’s gonna have to be fixed soon. The classic Juno issue.
Roland TR-909 & TB-303
I use the 303 a lot at the moment. I’ve never been brave enough to program it properly, though, so I just program random basslines till I find a good weird one.
The 909 is like a relic here and I still use it for its typical rides, hi-hats or snares. I mainly use samples and Maschine for my beats but it’s always fun to plug in this old babe. I also use the sequencer and its external output to trigger the SH-101 or the modular. It’s a great way to generate ideas.
Doepfer Modular A100
I bought this on eBay. I’m waiting for another empty rack to install my just bought Pittsburgh and Tiptop filters, and awesome sounding MacBeth X Series oscillators.
Kawai 100F
I like this little shit! No MIDI here, just one nice sounding oscillator and filter.
Korg MS10
The little one from the MS family. I use its filter a lot.
Moog & Jupiter
The Minimoog Voyager is legendary. A childhood dream. I received it a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been massively using the Arturia software emulation of the original Model D, so I thought it would be cool to have the real shit here. I’m astonished by its straightforward layout, huge sound, warm stable oscillators and inimitable sexy filter.
The Roland Jupiter 6 is one of my favourite beasts here. I use it on almost every track. It’s great for basses, pads, stabs, effects… whatever.
Roland SH-101
A lot of people ask me about my ‘signature bass’. It’s all about the 101!
Rack Overview
Out of shot we have the Ensoniq DP4. That’s the typical French touch effect, including this lush Daft Punk phaser – I actually used it on ‘Manama’ to make the percussions and drums come to life. It has noisy but fat sounding 12-bit converters and great algorithms so I still use it a lot to warm things up.
I rediscovered my vintage equipment since I brought the beautiful Universal Audio LA610 mk2 preamp into the studio. It makes such a big difference to use a proper front end like this one.
The Clavia Nord Rack 2 is another relic of The Youngsters’ gigs. It’s in bad condition but still delivers nice sounds.
The Studio Electronics ATC1 has the Minimoog filter cartridge. Definitely different than a Moog, but so fat and dirty. Everybody coming here gets crazy with it.
Rodriguez Jr’s Persistence Of Vision EP is out now. Catch him at the Mobilee roof-top party at Hotel Diagonal, Barcelona on Thursday September 11th.
