2014 was an incredible year for analogue synths and 2015 looks set to deliver even more. We run through some of our favourites, from bargain Moogs to exotic offerings from Korg and DSI.

We last ran through our best analogue synth buys last summer, but even in the relatively short time period since then, a lot has changed.

The current wave of affordable analogue synths was kickstarted by the introduction of models like the Arturia MiniBrute in 2012 and the Korg MS-20 Mini and Novation Bass Station II in 2013, but in their wake we’ve been rewarded with more and more options as time goes by.

So much has happened in the analogue mono synth market over the last couple of years that it can be hard to keep up: synths that were considered bargains have been undercut by even more affordable options; sound quality keeps on rising; there’s more choice at every price level. The overall result is incredible for producers: we’ve got more options than ever before. We’re in a golden age of analogue hardware and that can only be a good thing when it comes to making music.

In this feature we round up ten of our favourite new analogue monosynths from 2014 and early 2015, with options starting at £269.

As always in Ten Of The Best, the synths are presented in ascending order of price.

  • Wow, so you can plug your guitar on ‘audio in’ and what comes out is the synth sound? Can the Moog Sub 37 do this? For midi sync, I would need midi connections right? Which is better Sub 37 or Pro 2?
