Analogue synths, Omnichords and frog keyboards… Giorgia Angiuli shows us around her studio.
Giorgia Angiuli – My Studio
I love to divide my job from my personal life in two particular moments: chaos and order. That’s why I work in two different rooms.
In one room I have all my favourite analogue synths, my acoustic instruments and my vintage toys collection; here I practise for my live sets, playing and recording many ideas. Then, I move to a second room where I rearrange all of my ideas, mixing and making some arrangements.
This studio is located in Florence, it’s called Multiverso and I share it with some other guys; it has been opened a few years ago thanks to Donato Masci, one of the most respected Italian acoustic physicists. I’m feeling very lucky to work here, since I can feel the perception of every sound really clear and distinct.
My Favourite Synths
I love analogue synths, and at the moment my favourite synths are Moog Sub37, Roland Juno-106 and SH-2, Korg MS2000 and Dave Smith OB-6.
The approach with synthesisers is completely different from using plugins, I am a musician so I need to feel the contact with real instruments.
Moog Sub37
This synth changed my life! I can always create a perfect bassline with it and I never feel bored of it. It’s also paraphonic, and this means that you have many possibilities to create a lot of special sounds. Its filter is dope.
My Stringed Instruments
I studied classical guitar and I used to play in a nu-metal band for many years… I often record electric bass or some guitar in my tracks and I also like to play them to relax myself. As you can see, I am a big fan of pink.
UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt
I bought it two years ago and I’ve had a lot of benefits since then. It’s a small and powerful piece that enables you to get great quality in the mix. With this gear you can use a big library of plugins that create a very good emulation of analogue hardware such as Studer, Lexicon, Neve, Pultec and many others…
Sylphyo
This is my last purchase and it is the first wireless MIDI breath controller that provides the feeling of an acoustic instrument. New instruments have to generate new feelings through unconventional sounds. The slider and the inertial sensors offer you unmatched expressive capabilities, plus if you shake it you can activate the inertial mode so you can control sounds by shaking and orienting it in the air. I do love it!
Frog Mini Keyboard from the 60s
I love vintage toys and I have many of them but this is one of my favourites. It is a gift that I got from some friends of mine. I love it! Each note corresponds to a frog that opens its mouth when played. Each frog has a different colour.
Omnichord
The Omnichord is an electronic autoharp with an amazing design, introduced in 1981 by the Suzuki Musical Instrument Corporation. It has a unique, chiming timbre and it’s portable. I recorded it in my last track ‘Over The Clouds’, out on Suara.
My Microphone: AKG C414
This is a condenser microphone that offers me a choice of nine polar patterns for the perfect sonic capture for every application.
I use this microphone to record my voice and other instruments such as strings, percussion and wind instruments. It works very well in the studio because it’s really versatile.
