Ataxia – My Studio

My Baby crew jam in progress. Ataxia on the robot boxes, Mister Joshooa on the the Allen & Heath GL desk making sure we are pushing the sounds to their limits. Getting that genuine, old-school vibe from the British EQ all over our input signals is critical for character.

Whole Studio

Grinding it out and chopping it up. It seems futuristic but it really isn’t… We are really just cavemen, as it turns out.

Mister Joshooa

Mister Joshooa is more than just My Baby’s dirty TV secret. He is a heck of a studio rat, and a favourite person for Ataxia to collaborate with. He’s really the only one who has put up with our shit for long enough to share a studio with us…

Jam Table

We use the robots to talk to the robots. The Elektron gear is our powerhouse for jam sessions. Our Moog, DSI boards and 303 are getting pushed by the Octatrack, while the Analog 4 does the work on the 101. The Analog Rhytm has a shit load of our effects on it…

Effects pedals

Nothing beats outboard effects. Guitar pedals tend to be the most useful for giving life to the robots. The Eventide Pitch Factor and Boss DD-7 are just a handful of our arsenal but tend to get the most playtime. We came from playing in punk rock bands, so pieces like this remind us that we haven’t changed much.

Roland SH-101

The main piece. No 101, no Ataxia. It’s amazing we survived any amount of time of barely tolerating each other without this machine. Our Leftroom Records boss Matt Tolfrey predicted correctly many years ago, “the SH101 will be the game changer for Ataxia”. You can hear this synth on every single track we write, and in all of the ones we haven’t written yet…if you really want to hear it scream, check the lead synth line on ‘Villains’ off our Supertouch EP on Play It Say It.

Dave Smith Prophet-6 & 12

These two compete for attention. It’s best to not choose sides though, so we just let them talk to each other…

Prophet-12

A beast of a machine. Low-pass filter mania on big synth sweeps is a favourite way of spending time with this one. This one is an integral part of the My Baby sound.

Prophet-6

The Prophet-6 is a dream board. This machine is great for screaming leads and gnarly gritty glitches, bleeps, bloops and noise. The internal sequencer rips it up too, although getting that thing to not start when our main sequencer starts was a pain in the ass.

You can hear this synth on our new Visionquest release, Kodak Moment. All of the synth leads and atmospheres on the title track came from this machine.

Moog Sub Phatty

We copped this piece as a Moogfest artist gift in 2014. It’s got a sinister growl that can go toe to toe with any bass synth. It literally regurgitated the bass line to ‘Afternoon Acid’ one day, and it became our first Play It Say It release.

Our friends give away rubber ducks all over the world. More nonsense…

My Baby Records is run out of this studio by world famous TV Lounge guy Mister Joshooa. Rickers is a driving force with him on that as well, both curating the label, focusing on nitty gritty Detroit folk and some favourite friends from the outside world. So, naturally, there is weird baby stuff everywhere… No one really gets it, except Josh.
