Founder of TF Concept, Tânia Filipa, describes her job.
Name?
Tânia Filipa
Place of work?
TF Concept – a design agency for the music industry.
Job?
Graphic designer
How long have you had the job?
Since I started the project in 2013.
What does a typical day involve?
A typical day involves lots of music, creativity and a lot of emails.
As a graphic designer in the music industry, it’s essential inspiration to listen to music that makes me feel good. Regardless of genre, it is the main component that makes the whole creative process go well. It’s safe to say there’s always noise around.
Every project is given my full attention and I work on a variety of different projects from branding to vinyl artwork. It’s important to focus on one project at a time so I can dedicate to it and create the best design possible. I start with a blank page in Illustrator and going with the natural flow, I create with how I feel in that particular moment. All artwork is created from scratch to give each piece a unique edge.
I also keep part of the day open in order to look for new work opportunities. It’s important to keep busy, spread the word and to advertise your skills as much as possible.
Highs of the job?
To leave my fingerprint within the art industry as a contributor to the minimal and geometric art scene.
It’s incredible to come across all kind of projects from across the world. From podcasts, to new records, to a new club opening…the music industry is a big world and the biggest high of the job is to be part of it.
Lows of the job?
Art helps music connect visually with the listener. However, some people only look at the profit margins instead of believing in solid artwork.
Sadly, the value and importance most people give to artwork in the music industry has declined.
Who are the people who’ve had the biggest influence on your career and why?
Ray Sison (Skilled Concept). My choice is based on the fact that I was stunned when I first saw his posters that showcased the interpretation of minimal design and that was the “kick” I needed to create my own career.
How did you get the job?
I started it myself. The name was based on my own name as I wanted to create something that reflected my own point of views. The logo reflects the geometry and minimalism behind TF Concept.
How can we get your job?
Easy! Believe in what you are doing. Even if it is completely different from what is being offered out there. Keep doing it, the right people will give the right value to it but you are the one that needs to lift it off the ground first.
