The Peep Show-referencing duo explain why their music is “the reincarnation of a Zulu war dance meets King Tubby” and why R Kelly’s Trapped In The Closet series changed their lives.

Who are you?

We are Alan Johnson – Gareth Kirby and Tom Neilan. It’s a collaborative project for us to explore different approaches in music and a platform to push our collective sound, away from the usual focus of our solo productions.

What do you sound like?

The sound is definitely informed by a lot of different music we’ve heard over the years, we have pretty similar tastes in sounds… At the moment we think that we sound like the reincarnation of a Zulu war dance meets King Tubby in 2013. It’s always best to let the music do the talking really.

Why should we listen to you?

Because when you pop the top… the panties drop.

What have you released so far? What else have you got coming out in the near future?

The first release is our 12” on Blank Mind – ‘Fickle’/’Goron Sound’ which is out now, available through Honest Jon’s exclusively until it hits all record shops later this month.

What song sums you up? Why?

We’d have to say R Kelly – ‘Trapped In The Closet’ episodes 1 – 24. It’s one continuous piece of music. That series changed our lives, for better or for worse. It’s an absolute masterpiece. If you don’t know… get to know.

What or who is your biggest influence and why?

We’re inspired most by our surroundings, our friends and the search for new sounds.

Where can we hear your music?

We just gave a remix away recently of Sandman’s ‘No Prisoners’ track, you can grab it here:

Where will you be in five years’ time?

Roof top livin’… More than likely still having fun, making music… hopefully somewhere in Japan.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

We both went to the same high school but never spoke to each other once in the five years we were there.
