“I’m influenced by someone excelling in their chosen field, whatever that might be.” Fred P-endorsed producer Bobby O’Donnell introduces himself.

Bobby

Who are you?

My name is Bobby O’Donnell and I’m a resident DJ for System at The Mint Club in Leeds. I also run a record label with Annie Errez, called Strobewax.

What do you sound like?

As much as I talk shit and love to waffle, it’s not for me to say, or to even understand. Plus its really wanky to describe your own music! I subscribe to the belief that once you’ve put something out there, then it really isn’t yours anymore. It’s also tough to explain something that you’ve worked on for days.

Why should we listen to you?

Because you have a bit of time to kill and you’re sick of watching rubbish videos on social media websites! Nah, I’ve been doing it for a good few years and spend most of my time and money on music. I really do care about it, full stop. That’s why, I think.

What have you released so far? What else have you got coming out in the near future?

I have had EPs on Mora Music, Catch and my own label. Last year my track ‘The Shards of Our Childhood’ was featured on the Selected compilation by Fred P on his Boards record label. This year I have an full EP on Boards, a couple of other exciting bits, and more on Strobewax.

What song sums you up? Why?

I suppose whatever is played at my funeral? I personally don’t have a favourite record, Ability 2’s ‘Pressure Dub’ is about as perfect as it gets, especially as it’s 25 years old this year. Vakula’s ‘Bug Powder’ is another.

What or who is your biggest influence and why?

My family. Regarding creativity though, I’m influenced by someone excelling in their chosen field, whatever that might be. It makes me get off my arse and make something!

Where can we hear your music?

On my SoundCloud and Facebook.

Where will you be in five years’ time?

Hopefully I’ll be doing music as a full-time job. There’s a way of wanting to do this as a viable job, without being too much on your knees about it. I’m not into music for popularity, it’s because I love it and have always gravitated towards music from an extremely young age. The honest approach is usually the longer way round, but it means that I learn the craft on the way, instead of using other people.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.

My Dad was on Salsoul Records.
