Space-age beats inspired by The X-Men and Studio Ghibli. We asked Shook to introduce himself.
Who are you?
Hello, I am Jasper, and I currently make music under the name Shook.
What do you sound like?
I sound like space androids trapped in a giant space ship travelling to far away galaxies while Casiopea is playing in the back and YMO is captaining the ship.
Why should we listen to you?
You should listen to my music if you like it! I am very lucky to get to create music for a living, and I hope you enjoy the music that I enjoyed creating. I have incredible fans – I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing if it wasn’t for them, I’m so thankful for that.
What have you released so far? What else have you got coming out in the near future?
I have released tons of stuff since I was a little kid. I was such a little punk with a cap all before my eyes all shady, but that was all very dark, and I am happy now! Under Shook I released The Glow EP in 2010. It got attention on Myspace and I did a bunch of remixes for Ellie Goulding, Phoenix and Jamiroquai and many others. I did an EP afterwards called The Rise And Fall EP in 2012, in 2013 I released my self-titled album Shook and now I have my second album which was released on November 19th called Spectrum.
What song sums you up? Why?
That’s a tough one! Well, I like the theme song from The X-Men from the 90s. My favorite character was probably Gambit, but looking back he is such a douche because he was always hitting on Rogue even though she always rejected him. Hmmm… I probably like Wolverine more now.
What or who is your biggest influence and why?
I get influenced by so many things, not just one big thing. Recently I have been watching a lot of Ghibli movies like Howl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro. I really love it when something has more meaning to it, whether this be in movies, music, art, something you see in everyday life, anything really. I sometimes miss this in today’s music where it’s a lot about the superficial thing like looks, popularity and so on. I don’t really buy in to those short-term hype things.
Where can we hear your music?
My last single release is called ‘Milestones’. It’s released on my own record label, Epicenter. You can hear it and most of my other releases on SoundCloud and find me on Facebook, my website and Twitter.
Where will you be in five years’ time?
Back in space, where I will be emptying the clips of my custom laser gun on an army of clones.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.
Yesterday I recorded a small piece of piano on my mobile phone, and I am trying to find time to record it. I have a lot of these ideas in my phone, hopefully I won’t forget this one.
Shook’s new LP Spectrum is out now on Epicenter. Buy it here. Find Shook on Facebook, Twitter and SoundCloud.
