“The key to making a good track? We’ve got to enjoy it.” Amine Edge & DANCE show us around their studio.
Amine Edge & DANCE – My Studio
This is one of our two studios. We don’t have crazy studios, but the day will come when we will buy our own house and build a crazy studio with more equipment. So for now this is it. What we both like when we make music is to have everything very close, and that’s why it looks so compact.
We have used Yamaha HS80Ms as monitors for a long time now – not because we love them, but just because after many years we know them perfectly.
We use two massive 28-inch screens to create, edit music, and mix the track all at same time. We don’t do music, then mixing, then mastering – but we rather do all at the same time, step-by-step in the same session. There is nothing more frustrating than making music if the sound is not good – it must sound amazing from the first to the last, and that’s our key to making a good track: we need to enjoy it.
Moog Voyager & Roland JP-08
The Moog Voyager is one of the biggest classics from Moog. There are many good presets you can use, or you can start blank and create your own sound. We use it mostly for bass and we know a little bit about how to create our own sound. It’s a lot of work, but at the end you have a unique sound. We used it on ‘Halfway Crooks’ and many other tracks.
The Roland JP-08 is a miniature version of the Roland Jupiter-8. It’s a pure pleasure to have it. We got it very recently so we haven’t done any tracks with it yet, but I’m sure it will happen soon.
Roland TR-8 & TB-3
The Roland TR-8 is the digital sister of the legendary TR-808 and 909. It’s so much fun to do beats with, and is a dream for 90s kids that Roland made come true.
The TR-8 is joined by another new baby. The TB-303 was a dream to make acid house tracks on, and now it’s possible again with the TB-3. This machine is so easy to use, you don’t need to be a genius to do something really amazing with it. We recently did a track with DJ Deeon using only the TR-8 and TB-3, and it was a blast! One of the amazing things about this baby is that it has lot of presets. A lot! Plus, if you are smart, you can use it as a mini controller for another synth or plugin – you will have the acid loop modulation with any sound you want, and your brain is your only limit.
UAD 2 Quad Apollo
This is our favourite sound card and DSP. For years we have used the UAD Neve plugins for the mastering of all our tracks, and we recently bought the Apollo Quad to expand and use those plugins and others on all of our stems without a CPU limit.
Vinyl Addiction
We are vinyl addicts. We began collecting our set of around 1,600 records in childhood with small weekly money, and recently bought the entire collection of DJ Buckley Boland from The Haçienda, which are around 5,000 items of mostly 90s house. What a blessing this brought to the entire collection – a man’s life devotion and passion, and a piece of history. This is more precious than any gold or diamonds.
Rane Mixer and Technics
The Rane MP2015 is the Rolls Royce of mixers, and it’s all rotary. It’s a pleasure for DJs who love the rotary style, but who also have experimenters’ ears. The analogue sound, the filters, the frequencies – it is too good.
We also have a pair of the first Technics, model SL1200 mk2, but we recently met the Panasonic team, who hooked us up with four of the new 1200 Technics units that are gonna be released in June.
Action Figures
Amine is a kid – he loves toys. These are some of his favourite childhood action figures: Rambo, ET, Terminator, Robocop and Back To The Future.
