My Studio – Phil Weeks
Phil Weeks shows us around his Paris studio…
Akai MPC3000LE
The masterpiece in my studio. It’s my sequencer, sampler, filter, main creative box. It’s old school, not so technical, but it sounds very dope, as I like it!
Roland TR-909
Classic drum machine. I also use this a lot – not on every track, but almost. Its synced through my MPC and I program all the beats directly onto it (it has his own sequencer). I never use it as a MIDI instrument cause I love its own groove. It sounds fat also.
Roland TB-303
Another classic piece of gear that was originally made to program simple basslines. It then became famous for the acid sound. Its an amazing piece if you know how to program it (check the video I made about it). I made the bassline of ‘It’s The Inside That Counts’ with it.
The Roland SH-09
One of the first pieces of gear I bought. Its kind of sentimental for me. I love it. I love the way it looks. It’s a monosynth that can sound huge. I use it only a little, for FX mostly or for some random sequence.
Yamaha 03D
The mixer. There’s nothing special to say about it really, but it’s very easy to use and I can easily save all my projects (compared to an analogue mixer). It’s just very convenient and essential for me.
My Monitors
One pair are really small, by Fostex. They’re actually my main ones. I love them. When it sounds good there, it’s all good. I use the Dynaudio BM5 (which are small also) just to enjoy more from time to time. I control everything in the Sony MDR7506 headphones.
The Mighty Might
The piece I use the most in the studio. Actually it really is. From when I wake up until I go to bed. Probably the best vape on the market.
Phil Weeks’ Raw Instrumental Vol.2 is out via his own Robsoul Recordings on January 27th. Find him on Facebook, Twitter and SoundCloud.
