Sonny Fodera shows us around his east London studio, complete with fully licensed bar downstairs.
Sonny Fodera – My Studio
Me in the studio. The studio is in Hackney, East London.
Synths
I have a Moog Sub 37, MicroKorg XL and Elektron Analog Keys. The Moog Sub 37 is great for basslines and weird sounds – I love the arpeggiator feature on there too.
The MicroKorg XL is great for pads and poly key sounds, and the vocoder is fun to mess around with.
Claude Von Stroke recommended I get the Elektron Analog Keys, which is great for basslines and lead sounds. It is such a great synthesiser – one of my favourites for sure.
The TC Helicon VoiceLive 2 (just visible top right) is really amazing for quirky vocal sounds. I love messing around with it. It also makes you sound like an awesome singer. Well, I think so anyway…
Studio Monitors
Focal Twins and KRK RP5s. When people come into my studio they always laugh at my KRKs, but I think they are amazing for bass frequencies! They are cheap and probably the most bought speaker in the world. I think if you can get the bass sounding nice on these it’ll sound amazing on anything.
The Focal Twins are next level for mid and high accuracy. I use these as my main speakers but love to incorporate them with the KRKs. I think it really sounds good using them both together. I think I am going to get the Event Opals soon also to add to the collection.
Novation Bass Station 2 & Moog Minitaur
The Novation Bass Station 2. I love this synth. I also use it as a MIDI controller for my computer and my Moog Minitaur. It has a really cool arpeggiator setting, which brings a lot out of the Moog Minitaur as well as soft synth plugins on my computer.
Native Instruments Maschine Studio
This piece of hardware is awesome! It is really great to get ideas down quickly. The 909 and 808 kits are amazing quality, and you can also use all NI instruments with it, as well as Arturia and Spectrasonics soft synths. You can literally make a full track on it, so it can get you away from the computer screen for a bit. I also love it for drum patterns and adding extra hits.
NT’s Bar
This is what I can’t go without: a bar called NT’s in the same building of my studio. A great place to get a quick drink or coffee to refresh your creativeness. Such a great vibe too.
Sonny Fodera is the new The Redlight resident at Sankeys Ibiza this summer. ‘Don’t Touch Me When I’m Dancing’ sees 4th Measure Men (MK) team up with Sonny. Out now. Find Sonny on Facebook, Twitter and SoundCloud.
