As resident at Fabric, Daniel Avery is already held in the highest regard as a DJ. With his new EP an early contender as one of the best records of the year, he’s fast making a name for himself as a producer too. Here the man formerly known as Stopmakingme explains his love of Marilyn Manson, Kylie and My Bloody Valentine.
What’s the first record you ever bought?
The first record I bought with my own money must have been the S&M live album by Metallica. Either that or Holy Wood by Marilyn Manson. That band knew how to write a glam riff!
The first time you heard electronic music?
I absolutely loved The Prodigy as a youngster. My dad took me to see them in Bournemouth when I was eleven on their Fat Of The Land tour. I also vividly remember taping Daft Punk – ‘Da Funk’ and Chemical Brothers’ ‘Block Rockin’ Beats’ from the radio. They were heady times for decent dance music entering the mainstream.
Your favourite ever record?
Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. It’s a perfect, dreamy, enveloping trip of a record filled with beautiful melodies hidden under layers of noise. Kevin Shields is a genius as far as I’m concerned.
The guaranteed floor-filler?
Rather unexpectedly, this has been working every time recently. It’s only unexpected in that it’s a pretty oddball, underground house track but crowds seem to really go for it. Clouded Vision is an excellent record label – I always trust Matt’s taste.
