“I was at a funeral a couple of years ago and somehow ended up playing through a bunch of happy hardcore bangers… After the initial shock it fully lifted the vibe.”
What’s the first record you ever bought?
I think it was Mr Scruff – Keep It Unreal, I picked it up because they didn’t have the Mr Dibbs CD I was looking for in the shop and I think it was in the same section. I recognised the cover from the soundtrack credits of a skate video I was watching a lot at the time. ‘Fish’ has to be my favourite track on the album.
The best chillout record?
Lootpack – Soundpieces: Da Antidote. The album just rolls from track to track so easy, every beat works real well beside the next, it’s super mellow. I used to play through this album all the time when I was younger, just chilling at home, sketching or whatever. If I was to pick a favourite track it would be ‘Likwit Fusion’. Me and a friend named our first series of club nights after this track. I still play the album a lot.
The guaranteed floorfiller?
Would have to be either DJ Sany Pitbull – ‘Troca-Aplica’ or DJ Technics – ‘My Life Extra’, I feel it’s literally impossible to hear tracks with so much energy like these and not feel compelled to dance.
The best record for a family party?
I was at a wake after a family funeral a couple of years ago and somehow ended up playing through a bunch of happy hardcore bangers off the stereo in the living room with my cousin. We had Hixxy & Sharkey‘s first Bonkers CD running and after the initial shock it fully lifted the vibe of the wake, had the whole family up dancing. It was amazing.
The future classic?
Bleaker – ‘Hype (Funk)’, if it’s not already considered a classic. Absolute belter of a tune. I knew it was a classic the first time I heard it.
The first time you remember hearing electronic music?
I’m sure I had heard electronic music before this but the first time I remember being totally gripped by a record was when So Solid‘s first album came out. I must have been about eight years old at the time and ’21 Seconds’ was playing everywhere on the radio. I had never heard anything like it before – it was total alien music to me. Crazy to think that album came out 15 years ago now. I remember being up the Barras market with my mum and convincing her to buy me a pirate copy of the album from one of the stalls. I’ve still got it too.
The guilty pleasure?
Jason Derulo – ‘Wiggle’. Hah, it’s the beat, such a banger!
