The record everyone loves but you hate?
Where do I begin?! ‘Music Is The Answer’ – Danny Tenaglia, Carl Craig’s remix of Theo Parrish’s ‘Falling Up’ and a bunch of others. They sound like a cross between songs from Sesame Street and a bad hangover.
The best record for a family party?
Grandmaster Flash, Essential Mix: Classic Edition. It has to be the best compilation of true modern essentials, from James Brown to Blondie, Liquid Liquid to Afrika Bambaataa. It would make for one loud and happy family dinner.
The soundtrack to a lazy Sunday afternoon?
Serge Gainsbourg – Histoire de Melody Nelson. The record is a story about Melody Nelson and it moves softly between the different stages and versions. A while ago I wanted to make a tribute to a good friend so I chopped them all up into a track called ‘Melody Marvel’. The track was supposed to open the New Moon album but I guess it’s not easy releasing samples of Serge so we dropped it.
The worst record you’ve ever heard?
I can’t remember bad records. Lately I think most of the bad stuff I heard were edits of awesome old songs that had been done with no respect for the song – someone speeding up the song a bit and adding a kick. So cheap.
The future classic?
Nicolas Jaar – ‘Time For Us’. As opposed to all those that sample amazing hits from the past, Nico wrote a really sensitive song and made it simple and effective. Big up for being original and for getting the panties to drop.
