“I heard Zip playing Sascha Dive’s remix of ‘Two Armadillos’ and it blew my mind. Now having his remix on my record is a dream come true!” Robbie Akbal talks us through his all-time favourites.
What’s the first record you ever bought?
Wipeout XL. I bought this CD on a high school graduation trip to the USA in 1996. It includes tracks by Daft Punk, Orbital, Future Sound of London and many more.
The first time you remember hearing electronic music?
I think in my brother’s car when I was 12 years. It was a techno rave tape.
The last track of the night?
I’ve been finishing my sets lately with this Christopher Ledger edit. I heard it at Sunwaves this year and, randomly, Christopher himself sent me this track when I was getting home from the festival. The vocal has a lot of feeling, the keyboards are groovy as F… And it’s not a 4/4 record.
The best chillout record?
John Beltran – ‘Gutaris Breeze (6000km to Amsterdam)’. Peaceful ambient bliss here. It reminds me of growing up on the lovely beaches in Tulum in the late 90s when nobody knew this destination. It was quiet, beautiful and trippy.
The best record for a family party?
Pamoja – ‘Oooh, Baby’. It’s a very happy and so fresh record to enjoy family time with.
The soundtrack to a lazy Sunday afternoon?
Antena – ‘Camino Del Sol’. Balearic vibes to the max. Perfect record for a lazy chill Sunday afternoon.
The record you’re proudest of?
Sascha Dive’s remix of my record ‘Sun Warrior’ with Veronika Fleyta. It’s a timeless rolling groover. I hope it never gets old… The first time I went to Panorama Bar, I heard Zip playing Sascha Dive’s remix of ‘Two Armadillos’ and it blew my mind. Now having his remix on my record is a dream come true!
Robbie Akbal’s ‘Mezcal Night’ is out now on his own Akbar Music, including Swayzak and Jay Tripwire remixes. Find him on Facebook and SoundCloud.
