A new location-based mobile app offers an intriguing new experience for music fans.
GigDropper is a new location-based music and sound discovery app. Described by its founder Ross Evans as an ‘ultra-local audio experience’, the app allows users to ‘drop’ an audio clip at a location associated with that sound or song.
Building on the success of other location-based services such as Foursquare, the app will use geographical locations as a focal point for sharing content – in GigDropper’s case, audio content.
GigDropper aims to enable users to discover music which is relevant and particular to a place they know well, or a new place they have either sought out or stumbled across. It also hopes to be a conduit for bands to connect with new audiences through atypical and previously untapped lines of communication. The app’s website invites early adopters to ‘litter the world with music’ by creating and dropping content around the country and asks that they explore the most creative ways to use the platform.
GigDropper has already piqued the interest of Red Bull Music Academy. The two are partnering for RBMA’s Revolutions in Sound 2013 on the London Eye in November. The event will celebrate RBMA’s 15th birthday and explore the history of UK club culture. Club brands including Bugged Out!, Bristol’s Motion, West London’s Yo Yo and Glasgow’s Sub Club will host capsules on the Eye and all 30 stages will be streamed live on 4oD and YouTube. To complement RBMA’s salute to the beacons of UK nightlife, GigDropper will be creating virtual portals to clubbing history across the country which will host spoken word snippets and memories from some of the scene’s originators.
