This week’s top mixes include I-Fs intergalactic mix up, Ambivalent’s techno exclusives, Kuedo defying musical borders, and Björk’s Tri-Angle Records birthday set.
Björk’s Tri-Angle Records Birthday Set. A surprise set the Icelandic pop artist played at Tri Angle Records‘ fifth birthday in New York last weekend, about which she said “i would like to wish tri angle label an incredibly sublime birthday and thank for having been invited to dj at their party . couldnt possibly been more honoured than to play in that company !!! the mix i played was my present to them : merging together some of my fav beats last year with some of my fav vocalists doing some of their best songs.” Stream above, track listing here.
Intergalactic I-F Mixing Up RA. I-F is the stage name of Dutch producer and DJ Ferenc E van der Sluijs, who through the constantly-running cult radio station he heads – Intergalactic FM – has built a global community around his crew from The Hague, which includes Legowelt, and Guy Tavares of Bunker Records. He is also a former member of the Dutch techno-pioneers Unit Moebius and is the latest contributor to RA‘s podcast series. Download the mix and read an interview with I-F here.
Ambivalent’s Techno Exclusives. In the most recent edition of The Boiler Room‘s weekly Upfront mix series, where artists, DJs and record labels are asked to peer into the near future of music, Ambivalent – the boss of both techno and acid label Delft and weird-leaning warehouse techno label Valence, plays 100% hypnotic and nearly 100% exclusive “strobelit, smoky techno timelessness”. Kuedo Defying Musical Borders. One half of Planet Mu favourites Vex’d, and the cofounder of a new label and art imprint Knives alongside Joe Shakespeare, Kuedo’s 45-minute Truancy Volume 117 parallels Knives’ ethos to defy borders and seamlessly bonds together all types of music, from the melodic vocals of Atlanta rapper Que to the transcending sounds of newcomer Sami Baha. He explains: “I wanted to do something influenced by club dynamics, but also I figured it should acknowledge that its going to be heard on headphones, at office desks, on the bus etcetera, rather than any actual living club space. So it loosens itself from rigid club logic and opens up some more airy spaces too.” Stream and download above, track listing here.
Troy Pierce’s Exploratory AIAIAI Mix. The techno producer, M_nus artist and head of Items and Things has delivered an exploratory mix taking in bits of ambient, bursts of drone and a fair share of good old-fashioned, uplifting, ethereal electronic music, about which he said: “I find a lot of amazing music that will never make it in to a dj set. I wanted to make a “headphone” mix focusing on the more challenging stuff I enjoy listening to… This is my soundtrack for biking through Berlin” – via AIAIAI. Stream and download above.
Kamera’s Pavé Mix. Promoting his debut EP, released by Erol Alkan‘s Phantasy Sound, where he debuted with a remix of Alkan’s shimmering single ‘Sub Conscious’, Kamera – the necessary alias of an established recording artist – has just dropped his first DJ mix entitled The Pavé Mix, influenced by bands such as Sunn o))), Fugazi, Autechre, Sabres of Paradise, and any music that “generally doesn’t necessarily make a lot of sense”.
