This week’s top mixes include Funkineven’s signature style, Oakenfold from Spectrum in ’88, Addison Groove’s Solid Steel show, and crate digging in NY with Appleblim.
Crate Digging in NY with Appleblim. From his involvement in the heavily revered UK imprint Skull Disco to the birth of his own label Apple Pips, Laurie ‘Appleblim’ Osborne has always seemed to represent his own thing to the fullest. Here he blends the result of “a good 6 or 7 hours digging” through $2 records in The Thing record store, Brooklyn, for Fabric – who accompanied this mix with an interview. Funkineven’s signature style. The Londoner plays a mix of almost entirely unreleased tracks in his signature style: a complex blend of electro, 80s funk, and acid for XLR8R. Stream, download and full track listing here.
Addison Groove’s Solid Steel show. Bristolian Addison Groove spins a diverse mix for Ninja Tune‘s 25-year-strong institution Solid Steel, moving from roots dub through more abstract territory towards modern hip-hop and a footwork selection. Stream and download above, full track listing here.
Oakenfold’s Spectrum ’88. A tape from the collection of Milan-based Balearic DJ Leo Mas, given to him by trance DJ Paul Oakenfold in June 1988, which is a live recording from the seminal Spectrum club night, where you can “hear the extent of Oakie’s skill at “putting together too many (now) classic records to mention”. Stream and download here.
Kevin Saunderson in the mix for Defected. The techno icon drops a guest mix for Defected’s In The House Radio show, which also features choice cuts from the likes of FCL, Hercules & Love Affair and the two Todds Terry and Terje. Stream above.
