This week’s best mixes include Rolando’s Detroit afterhours set, Kode9’s Hyperdub 10.1 mini-mix, Xosar’s conjuring and LV’s journey soundtrack.
Hyperdub 10.1 Mini-Mix. A mini-mix from Hyperdub label boss Kode9, providing an exclusive preview of previously unreleased music from no less than Mala, Kuedo, DJ Rashad and Kode9 himself. All is to be put out on the upcoming compilation Hyperdub 10.1, available 19th May. Give it a listen above.
Detroit Afterhours. Detroit-born, Edinburgh-based DJ and ex-Underground Resistance member Rolando shares his found cassette recording of a live set at Detroit club Afterhours in the 90s. It’s packed full of classic techno, including A Guy Called Gerald, Gene Farris, Members of the House and Carl Craig. Stream below.
Perc & Truss at Soenda. The London-based techno collaborators’ driving set from Dutch techno festival Soenda. Stream or download above.
Xosar conjures a cinematic narrative out of quasi-ambient analogue synth lines, hard kicks, unique percussive grooves and voice actor samples lost within layers of echo and reverb. She recommends this mix “if you’re in a weird mood, dark and intense, and are looking to match this mood.” Stream or download below.
“Free Jazz” is a recording of a remarkable improvisatory session that took place between a selection of artists, one being ex-Hype Williams man Dean Blunt, in Dalston’s Cafe Oto on the first of this month. At just under an hour long the set’s highly dynamic transitions blaze through moods, spaces and textures. Stream below.
LV soundtracks your journey. London’s underground bass duo LV combine their influences into a musical journey to soundtrack your real life journey. According to the duo: “Moving through the city with headphones on is one of the best ways to hear new music. It’s also a good way to add pathos to an otherwise mundane trip.” Stream below, track listing available here.
